In contrast to all other nuts Brazil nut kernels cannot be cultivated in plantations - they can only be collected wild in the rainforest
When it rains a lot in Bolivia between December and April the large capsules which usually contain around 20 kernels or nuts fall from the up to 50m high Brazil nut trees
At the foot of the tree the capsules are opened and the kernels are removed
These are then dried at central collection points before they are gently roasted and then cracked - only here does the Brazil nut appear as we know it
The relatively large brown-white nut has a slightly earthy taste and is a good source of magnesium and phosphorus as well as being rich in vitamin E
