The orange-red Hokkaido has an average weight of 1.5 kilograms and contains a poor-fibered light to dark orange coloured fruit flesh. The slightly nutty taste reminds one of sweet chestnuts. The squash has its origin in South America. Today, it is cultivated in all warm regions all over the world. At the end of the 19th century, the pumpkin was introduced to the Japanese island of Hokkaido by American farming consultants. Over the years, the Japanese managed to breed from the initially rather poor-tasting squash the delicate Hokkaido pumpkin variety.
